Meet the Candidates 🏛️
The race for Southold Town Board is heating up, and if there’s one thing all six candidates agree on, it’s this: the North Fork isn’t the sleepy farm town it used to be. But how to handle that change? That’s where things get spicy.
At a packed Meet the Candidates Forum hosted by the North Fork Civics, more than 100 locals filled the Peconic Lane Rec Center to hear where the candidates stand on the big issues.
🏠 The Housing Headache
Affordable housing took center stage. Every candidate agreed it’s the biggest issue on the table, especially for young families, teachers, and local workers. Ideas ranged from streamlining approvals to expanding housing overlays and creating land trusts to keep homes within reach.
💰 Budgets, Bills & Big Projects
Next up: money talk. Candidates called for more transparency and plain-English communication around taxes, big-ticket projects, and long-overdue infrastructure work.
🌊 Rising Seas & Real Talk
Coastal flooding and rising tides hit close to home (literally). Candidates agreed it’s time to double down on coastal resiliency, from protecting Main Road and Route 48 to using natural barriers like marshes and eelgrass.
🧳 Tourism vs. Year-Round Living
The final topic: Southold’s identity. Is it a tourist haven or a year-round hometown? Most agreed the answer lies in balance, keeping open space protected, supporting local businesses, and making sure the people who pour the coffee, fix the roads, and teach our kids can actually live here.

“The Worker” 🎨
OLA of Eastern Long Island and North Fork Arts Center are teaming up to present “The Worker”, an art exhibit that puts labor on the pedestal it deserves, as identity, dignity, pride, and resilience.
The gallery opens its doors for the public reception on Saturday, Oct. 18 in Greenport, and the show stays up through November 13.
Curated by Kelynn Z. Alder alongside OLA, “The Worker” features 26 powerful voices and mediums that celebrate working people, especially those in Latino and immigrant communities on the East End.
