Orient’s Got Water, But For How Long? 💧

The Orient Association just dropped a 150-page report on the state of the hamlet’s water, and let’s just say it’s not all smooth sailing.

The Good News:
Orient’s aquifer (aka the giant sponge under our feet) is holding about 6.8 billion gallons of freshwater. Rainfall helps recharge it with 4.2 million gallons a day, which is currently enough for residents, farms, and businesses.

The Bad News:
That balance is delicate, and it’s under threat from three major villains:

-Sea level rise: Projected to climb 21 inches by 2050 and up to 47 inches by 2100. That could chop the aquifer’s capacity by 20% and let saltwater sneak in from below.
-Contamination: Nearly half of Orient’s private wells tested since 2022 had PFAS levels (aka “forever chemicals”) above the state’s limit.
-Development pressure: More buildings = more stress on our fragile water system.

The report urges smarter planning, stronger rules, and conservation before we dig more pipes. Because once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Remembering Eleanor Lingo ❤️

Last summer, Eleanor Lingo led the very first Juneteenth parade through downtown Greenport, she along with her husband O.D. were the Grand Marshals. This summer, the whole town is honoring the woman who made it happen.

Eleanor passed away last weekend at age 99, but not before helping plan this year’s Juneteenth celebration. Through the years Eleanor fought for civil rights, championed inclusivity, and looked to make Southold and Greenport better through unity.

Since Eleanor’s passing, love has been pouring in, from family, friends, neighbors, and leaders, each sharing stories about her kindness, strength, and the way she brought people together like sunshine after a storm.

Foodie Friday 🍽

The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and while fireworks light up the sky and flags fly high, let’s not forget America’s true patriotic pastime: the humble, glorious hot dog. Whether you like it classic with mustard or loaded like a firework finale, the dog is king of the cookout. So we’re spilling the beans on our favorite spot to grab one on the North Fork. Spoiler alert: it’s worth the drive and maybe even a second dog.

Little Creek Oysters 🦪🌭

Little Creek Oysters may be famous for, you guessed it, oysters, but there’s another star of the show: the hot dogs.

Yes, hot dogs. And not the sad ballpark kind. We’re talking gourmet, flavor-packed creations that could easily steal the spotlight from the seafood. While the raw bar remains top-tier, the real sleeper hit here is what’s coming out of the bun-toasting corner of the kitchen.

Little Creek offers three standout dogs that’ll make you rethink everything you thought you knew about hot dogs:

🌭 The Pat Nelson Dog is a tangy, crunchy, creamy masterpiece topped with relish, remoulade, and crispy fried onions.

🌭The Big Al Italian Dog brings a rich, savory vibe with sundried tomatoes, pesto, prosciutto, and parm. Basically, your favorite antipasto board, on a hot dog.

🌭 The Portuguese Dog leans into heat and melt with provolone and housemade piri piri butter. It’s spicy, gooey, and completely addicting.

While these dogs are available regularly, Wednesday is the day to go. That’s when Little Creek hosts its weekly Happy Hour, which we like to call Hot Dog Wednesday. Specials on drinks and discounted dogs make it the perfect midweek treat, and honestly, once you try one, you’ll be tempted to try all three.

Of course, a cold drink in hand only makes the experience better, and the crew at Little Creek keeps the good times flowing with a solid beer list, crisp wines, and other sippables to round out your dog-fueled adventure.

Oysters may have built the house, but the hot dogs are throwing the party.
