Farm Fire Aftermath 🔥

A massive fire tore through Wells Farm on Nov. 12, destroying two barns, wiping out equipment and machinery, and killing nearly 20 animals. The Wells family estimates the damage at over $2 million.

Since the ashes settled, the community has shown up strong. Farmers dropped off tools. Retired growers offered their old machinery. Neighbors showed up to help clear debris. Strangers stopped by just to say, “What do you need?”

A GoFundMe to help rebuild has already raised over $13,000 toward its $22,000 goal and climbing.($)

Oyster Party 🦪

So… Shellabration 2025 got cancelled, Little Creek Oyster’s Hold Fast Fund swooped in like absolute heroes to keep the good times rolling with a shiny new weekend called Raise Shell 2025.

Why the switch up? Shellabration had ballooned to 1,500 attendees last year, and it got… complicated. Cornell Cooperative Extension and the Greenport BID hit pause to rethink how to make it better for SPAT and the whole village. Raise Shell is stepping in to bridge the gap and keep the oyster magic alive, with more than 35 local restaurants and shops joining the fun.

A clickable map of all participating spots is up now on the Raise Shell website, time to start plotting your route.

Peconic Star Fleet Eyes a Big New Boat 🚢

At Thursday’s Village Board work session, Mayor Kevin Stuessi gave an update on the future of the Peconic Star Fleet.

Arnold “Speedy” Hubert, the captain of the fleet, sold one of his boats earlier this year and just finished repairs on the other. Now he’s got his eye on a shiny new toy: An 80-foot vessel, complete with an awning and an upper deck licensed for 50 people.

The Peconic Star holds two licenses at the Railroad Dock, but each one is tied to an individual boat. Both current licenses run through May 2026, so renewing one is easy. The new boat? That needs a completely new license.

With others already eyeing that dock space the board laid down a timeline, Speedy has until March to finalize the purchase and submit everything. ($)

Greenport Says Goodbye to Kharmah 🛍

After three decades of funky, modern women’s fashion and countless memories, Kharmah is closing its doors. Loyal shoppers have been stopping by to hug owner Linda Gerien, and tell her exactly what her shop meant to them.

Linda and her husband have been mostly Brooklyn based these last years, where her daughter Jennifer now runs Lily, a Kharmah inspired boutique.

As Linda wraps up this chapter, she’s honest about what’s changed: soaring rents, rising costs, and the tough reality that young entrepreneurs would need “a massive amount of money” to start what she did in ’95. ($)
