No New Hotels (Yet) in Southold 🏨

The Southold Town Board just hit snooze on new hotels, motels, and resorts again. The board unanimously extended a moratorium on those kinds of developments for another year while they continue reworking the town’s zoning code.

Meanwhile, there was a lot of talk at the same meeting about a proposed 81-room hotel in Mattituck. It’s a scaled-down version of a previously pitched 121 room hotel with a full-on indoor water park (yes, really).

Some folks love it, saying it’ll help the local economy, cut down on Airbnbs, and bring in tax revenue. Others? Not so much. Think traffic, environmental concerns, and the ol’ “what about affordable housing?” debate.

The board closed the public hearing, but no final decision on the hotel just yet.

Splish Splash Turns 35! 🌊

Break out the swimsuits and sunscreen, Splish Splash, Long Island’s beloved water park, is celebrating its 35th season and going big.

Here’s what’s new:

🛝 Stingray Bay – A brand-new water playground for the little guppies, complete with spray features and pint-sized slides.

🍹 Luxury cabanas – Want to water park like a VIP? Check out Hang Ten Hideaway and Paradise Pavilion. Each one fits up to 40 people and comes with a bar, lounge chairs, showers, and cabana service overlooking the wave pool. Fancy.

🌙 Neon Nights – Every Friday and Saturday night from July 11–August 16, the park stays open late for after-dark fun with a wave pool light show, DJ, select rides, and snacks. (Free for gold and platinum pass holders; $10 for silver and bronze.)

🎨 Kidsfest weekends in June there’s balloon artists, face painting, and all the kid-friendly chaos you could want.

❄️ Winter Wonderland in July. Think fake snow, Santa, and other frosty surprises in the middle of summer.

💸 To celebrate the big 3-5, admission is just $39.99, and gold season passes are currently the price of silver ones. ($)

Foodie Friday 🍽

Last week, we finally got to see what all the buzz was about with Dawg Daze BBQ. The smoker was fired up outside Biggie’s, the place was busy (always a good sign), and the smell? Delicious. We came hungry, and curious. Dawg Daze brought the heat. And the meat. And, thankfully, the mac and cheese.

Here’s everything we tried, and why we have our eyes out for the next pop-up.

Dawg Daze BBQ Pop-Up 🍖

Dawg Daze BBQ parked their smoker at Biggie’s last week and smoked out any chance we had at a light dinner.

We rolled up hungry, we didn’t overdo it, but we definitely didn’t leave hungry. Brisket sandwich? A smoky, tender beast stacked on a bun plus pickled red onions that added the perfect tangy crunch. Pulled pork sandwich? Sweet, saucy, and topped with pickles and coleslaw for that classic BBQ bite.

Then came the sides. And honestly, we’d show up for those alone:

  • Fries: crispy, hot, not trying to reinvent the wheel, just doing it right.

  • Mac ‘n cheese: creamy and cheesy, to make you think somebody’s grandma was in the kitchen.

  • Smoked beans: bold, meaty, and lowkey the sleeper hit of the whole meal.

  • Collard greens: peppery with a savory backbone. You’ll almost feel like you made a healthy choice.

If you missed it, don’t panic, just follow @dawgdazebbq and be ready when the smoker rolls up next.
