Soil to Plate 🍽️

Swiss born restaurateur Christoph Mueller has built his North Fork restaurants around a simple idea: go straight to the source. Instead of relying on deliveries or markets, Mueller and his chefs regularly walk local farms, tasting, picking, and talking directly with growers to shape their menus.

That hands on approach defines his growing footprint in Greenport, where he owns Alpina, Green Hill Kitchen, and Anker. Mueller’s philosophy is rooted in his Swiss background: keep it simple, keep it high quality, don’t overwork the food.

But sourcing hyper local ingredients comes with tradeoffs, namely, the North Fork’s extreme seasonality.

Summer brings a surge. Winter brings hard decisions. Mueller has had to close restaurants seasonally and pivot with projects like Alpina Bakery and traditional Swiss sausage production to keep things running year-round.

Still, his belief hasn’t wavered: great restaurants are built on great ingredients, and word of mouth does the rest

Plant Sale 🌱

The North Fork Audubon Society is bringing back its annual spring native plant sale on May 16 and 17, setting up shop at the Roy Latham Nature Center. No preorders, no fuss, just show up and browse.

What started as a small effort to get more native plants into local yards has quietly grown into the East End’s longest running native plant sale. The mission hasn’t changed: make it easier for people to plant things that actually belong here, and support the birds, pollinators, and ecosystems that depend on them.

This year’s lineup includes more than 60 species native to the Northeast, all grown locally by Glover Perennials. Many are drought tolerant and deer resistant, aka plants that can handle real life Long Island conditions without constant babysitting. ($)

Getting Lost On Purpose 🎨

Mattituck artist Anne Sherwood Pundyk built her reputation on bold color, layered patterns, and canvases that are literally stitched together. But recently, she stepped outside that comfort zone, trading paint for printmaking and heading to Austin for a residency that would shake up her entire process.

The result is “Getting Lost On Purpose,” now on view at the gallery at Holy Trinity Church in Greenport and extended into early May. The show features a new series of prints that translate her signature visual language into something tighter, more immediate, a different medium, but the same fascination with color, shape, and meaning.

Printmaking forced her into unfamiliar territory, new materials, new techniques, and a lot of trial and error. But that uncertainty is exactly what she was after. It pushed her to experiment, rethink her approach, and ultimately sharpen her voice.

Local Spotlight

Shakespeare in the Park 🎭

There’s something especially fun about the idea of spending summer evenings in a park with Shakespeare in the mix, a little drama, a little comedy, and hopefully fewer mosquitoes than expected. For anyone who’s ever wanted to trade the audience for the stage, Northeast Stage is getting ready for this season’s Shakespeare in the Park production of All’s Well That Ends Well, with auditions coming up April 20 and 21 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport.

Auditions run from 7 to 9 p.m. on a first come, first served basis, with callbacks by invitation on April 22. Those planning to try out should come prepared with about 10 lines of a Shakespeare monologue. Rehearsals begin in late April, with performances set to run throughout July in parks and libraries across Suffolk County, which gives the whole thing that classic summer theater under the sky appeal.
