The Lowdown
Greenportās Blueprint š
Greenportās been buzzing lately, and not just from the tourists. Residents and business owners have been loud and clear: two things need fixing fast, housing shortages and those all-too-familiar empty storefronts.
The planning board just dropped its first draft of fixes, and while nothingās set in stone, hereās whatās on the table:
Housing
The village wants more year-round housing. Early ideas include:
Apartments and multi-unit buildings above shops and in commercial zones
Small-scale housing tucked into neighborhoods
Turning single-family homes into duplexes or triplexes
Vacancy Registry
Tired of walking past the same empty buildings? So is everyone else. The boardās idea: a vacancy registry. Owners of long-vacant properties would have to register, pay an annual fee that climbs the longer it sits, and keep the property maintained. ($)

CAST Gets $10K to Keep Southold Fed š„«
The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork just spread $50,000 in community grants across the East End, and CAST in Southold grabbed one of the biggest slices.
CASTās food pantry isnāt your typical food line, itās set up like a market, letting neighbors pick out exactly what they need. With federal cuts slashing food banks, SNAP, school meals, Medicaid, and heating aid, demand has skyrocketed. CAST now supports 1,500 households, nearly 4,000 people, including one-third of Southoldās kids. That fresh $10K will help keep shelves stocked and families nourished.
They werenāt the only ones getting a boost: OLA of Eastern Long Island scored funds for a second immigration attorney, Maureenās Haven got $7,500 to meet demand at its homeless shelters, The Butterfly Effect Project landed $10K for kids on the Shinnecock Reservation, Southampton Day Care Center picked up $5K for scholarships, and Sound Justice Initiative secured $7,500 to expand reentry courses in Suffolk jails.

Dog of The Week
Velvet š¾
Velvet. The name says it all. Smooth, soft, and absolutely impossible not to love.
This medium-sized heartthrob isnāt interested in squeaky toys or fancy treats, he just wants a cozy home and someone to adore. And trust us, heās the kind of dog that makes you feel lucky every single day.
The stats? House-trained, crate-trained, stair-savvy, car-approved, leash-pro like heās been doing it his whole life. He sleeps through the night, chills in the yard, and politely waits at dinnertime like a true gentleman. Heāll fetch, splash around, and snuggle, but only if invited. Affectionate without being clingy. Independent without being distant.
Oh, and did we mention? He doesnāt bark your ear off and he gets along with other pups. Yes, heās really that good.
Velvet is waiting at the Southold location. Call 631-765-1811 ext. 1 before someone else scoops up this one-in-a-million pup.

Trivia Time š§
Your brain deserves more than scrolling and skimming. Each week weāll hit you with one question designed to make you pause, scratch your head, and maybe argue with whoeverās sitting next to you. Think of it as a quick mental pit stop: a chance to flex your random knowledge, test your memory, or finally use that obscure fact you learned in 7th grade.
No prizes, no pressure, just bragging rights and the satisfaction of knowing youāre the smartest person reading this newsletter
Everyone knows Southold holds the crown as the oldest English town on Long Island (founded in June 1640). But which town came right after, also founded in 1640, making it the second oldest? |
