Good Morning, North Fork! Happy Arbor Day. Just in case you ever go on Jeopardy, this tree planting holiday was first documented in the Spanish village of MondoƱedo in 1594. The first American celebration? Nebraska City, NE in 1872.

The Lowdown

Will Sunrise Set? šŸŒ…

The sun may not be setting on Sunrise Wind just yet, but clouds are definitely rolling in.

The 84-turbine offshore wind farm off Montauk, designed to power 600,000 homes, is under the microscope after construction was abruptly halted on a neighboring project, Empire Wind 1. That decision has left locals wondering: is Sunrise next?

Governor Kathy Hochul says not on her watch. She’s fighting to keep wind energy projects, and the thousands of union jobs they bring on course. Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine is also staying optimistic, backing Sunrise Wind and its clean-energy promise.

The project, led by Ƙrsted, is already under construction and set to wrap in 2026. But between rising costs, past project cancellations, and a nationwide tug-of-war over energy priorities, it’s not exactly smooth sailing.

Adding to the complexity: local towns have pressed pause on battery storage systems tied to wind power, citing fire safety concerns. So for now, Sunrise Wind’s future hangs in a breeze filled with politics, power lines, and public opinion.

Checkmate, North Fork ā™Ÿļø

Mattituck Jr.-Sr. High just hosted the very first North Fork Chess Tournament, and it was anything but boring. Students from Mattituck, Riverhead, and Southold squared off in a 24-player strategic showdown that turned the school into a brainy battleground.

Riverhead swept the top three spots (someone’s been studying their openings), but Mattituck’s James Felakos held his own—making it all the way to the final four. Shoutout to the chess advisers: John Albers, Chris Strohsnitter, David Spinella, and Ivan Santiago for masterminding this cerebral clash.

Even students on the sidelines got into it, crowding in during free periods to watch the action or jump into casual matches. The vibe? Friendly rivalry meets intellectual intensity. The result? A checkmate-worthy success—and the first move in what’s sure to become a North Fork tradition.
