The Lowdown
Southold PD Earns State Accreditation 🚔
It took nearly two decades, a pandemic, a ransomware attack, and a mountain of paperwork, but the Southold Town Police Department has officially earned New York State Law Enforcement Accreditation.
The designation, awarded by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, recognizes departments that meet strict professional standards for training, operations, administration, and accountability.
Of the more than 500 law enforcement agencies across New York, only 185 currently hold the accreditation.
Police Chief Steve Grattan called it a milestone years in the making, noting the certification gives residents added confidence that the department is operating at the highest professional standards. ($)

Love Lane’s Newest Arrival 🧸
One by one, Love Lane's storefronts are filling with new life.
The latest addition to Mattituck’s busiest shopping strip is Petal & Peep, a new children's boutique stocked with everything from organic baby clothes and plush toys to nursery essentials and keepsake gifts.
Owned by Cutchogue resident and longtime retail professional ToniAnn Sinning, the shop officially opened earlier this month at 50 Love Lane. After more than four decades in retail, Sinning is bringing her experience in merchandising and customer service to a space designed for parents, grandparents, and anyone shopping for the little ones in their lives.

Golden Acres 👩🌾
Golden Acres Organic Farm may look quiet from the road, but behind the old barn, owner Kelly Brennan is growing vegetables, tending bees, hosting weddings, protecting corn from every critter imaginable, and preserving a piece of Jamesport history.
Brennan never planned to become a farmer. After a career in Manhattan and years managing the farm when it operated as Golden Earthworm, she stepped in to take over the 37 acre property when the previous owners moved away. In the process, she saved a crew that had become family and kept one of the area's longtime organic farms alive.
The property itself comes with plenty of history. Local author Kay Chorao's children's book The Little Farm by the Sea was inspired by this exact farm, and the names of the cows from the story can still be found hanging inside the barn.
Today, Golden Acres grows organic produce across 15 acres, maintains beehives, hosts community events, operates one of the East End's few organic U-pick strawberry patches, and continues expanding what the farm can offer.

Opportunity That Burst 🚰
A frozen pipe at Southold Town Hall didn't just flood offices this winter, it may have also derailed a nearly $1 million grant for improvements at Jean Cochran Park.
Town officials say the pipe burst on Feb. 9, the same day a state grant application was due. The disruption contributed to the town missing the deadline for funding that could have covered new bathrooms, parking lot improvements, fitness equipment, and other upgrades at the heavily used Peconic park.
Now, instead of a large state funded overhaul, Southold is exploring a slower, phased approach spread over three years.
The focus remains on the same issues residents have been discussing for years: permanent bathrooms, a safer parking lot, and the future of the aging roller hockey rink. ($)

Animal of The Week
Meet Tyson, he is the kind of dog who makes himself at home in your heart almost as quickly as he makes himself comfortable on the couch. Give him a little time to settle in, a few scratches behind the ears, and you'll discover a gentle, affectionate guy whose favorite hobbies include cuddling, playing outside, and being wherever his people are.
His foster family says Tyson is a true gentleman. He's house trained, sleeps through the night, knows commands like sit, stay, come, and go to bed, and can be trusted loose in the house while you're at work. No crate required, Tyson is perfectly happy spending the day snoozing until you get home.
He's friendly with other dogs, loves a good game of frisbee, enjoys bath time (with a little encouragement getting in), and takes his stuffed animals very seriously., although they don't tend to last very long. Consider it Tyson's way of supporting the durable toy industry. He's a quiet boy overall, more likely to ask for hugs than make a fuss, and while he's a little shy when meeting new people, he quickly warms up once he knows he's safe and loved.
What Tyson wants most is pretty simple: a family to cuddle with, a yard or park to explore, a few chew bones, and plenty of affection.

Last Week’s Results
Last week we asked: What U.S. state is the largest by total area?
Answer: Alaska
64% of you got it right. Turns out a lot of you remembered that Alaska is absolutely enormous. It's so big that if you split it in half, Texas would be the third largest state.
