The Lowdown

Southold Sets Ground Rules 🚨

The Southold Town Board unanimously adopted a new policy outlining how town police should respond when outside law enforcement agencies operate within Southold or Greenport.

When notified of an outside agency operation, Southold police will dispatch an officer to verify what is happening. Officers will activate body cameras, provide a calming presence and work to de-escalate confrontations without assisting or obstructing the operation unless legally required or presented with a judicial warrant.

For incidents affecting public safety, the police chief will notify the town supervisor, who will alert the Town Board, Greenport mayor and administrators at affected schools, hospitals and clinics. Police will also issue a timely public statement containing non-sensitive details.

The policy requires ongoing de-escalation training and calls for incidents to be reviewed afterward. A new Public Safety Committee will help explain the procedures to residents and serve as a bridge between the community and Town Hall, though the board has not yet formally created the committee.

History Hunt 🔎

Long Island’s past is getting a little more camera ready through the History Hunt, a region wide challenge celebrating America’s 250th birthday.

Visitors can stop at 26 museums, landmarks and historic sites, scan the QR code posted outside and enter to win prizes, including a $1,776 grand prize.

North Fork stops include Hallockville Museum Farm, the Mattituck-Laurel Historical Society and Museum, Southold Historical Museum and Oysterponds Historical Society.

The History Hunt runs through Sept. 30. ($)

Mahjong Moment 🀄️

Mahjong tables are popping up across the East End, bringing together longtime players, curious beginners and anyone willing to spend an afternoon learning the difference between dots, bams and cracks.

Yelp reports that searches for mahjong clubs increased 4,467% in 2026, while searches for lessons climbed 819%.

On the North Fork, Stacy Kostoulas recently launched NoFo Mahj Club after discovering the game as a way to make friends and carve out time for herself. Since June, she has hosted lessons and open play sessions at places like Mint on Love Lane, Aldo’s Coffee in Greenport and Main Road Biscuit Co. in Jamesport.

NOFO Live hosts Sunita Narma and Tracy Kessler are also helping build the local mahjong community. Their first meetup at The Shoals in Southold was held in March, followed by two more events with growing attendance.

Two New Rides 🚒

The Cutchogue Fire Department has added two major pieces of equipment to its fleet: a new ambulance and the first tanker truck in department history.

The $460,000 four wheel drive ambulance replaces a vehicle originally built in 1997. It has more room inside, but the equipment is arranged exactly like the department’s other ambulance so EMTs don’t have to rethink where anything is during an emergency.

The department’s new $562,000 tanker carries 4,000 gallons of water and includes a portable tank, deck gun and pump capable of moving 1,500 gallons per minute. ($)

Meet Ranch 🐾

Meet Ranch, a 9 year old gentleman who looks a little like someone shrunk a panther down to house cat size and gave him a much more relaxed schedule.

Ranch can be shy when you first meet him, but give him a little time, though, and this handsome, yellow eyed guy starts showing you who he really is. He loves soft beds, making biscuits, lickable treats, a good play session, and once you’ve earned his trust, curling up with his humans for a nap. He’s also good with people and other cats.

There’s something wonderfully calming about Ranch. He carries himself like a cat who has already lived several of his nine lives and has concluded that the best parts are comfortable places to sleep, good snacks, and people worth cuddling.
