Southold Says: Back It Up 🏊
If you’re planning a pool or a dock in Southold, better check the fine print. The Town Board just dropped a proposal that cranks up the rules on wetlands and shoreline projects.
Pools: They’d have to sit 60 feet from wetlands or 100 feet if you’re building with a big retaining wall.
Docks: Nine additional locations would be strictly off-limits for new residential builds (on top of the 17 already banned).
The board also wants tougher rules to keep folks honest, if you’ve got thoughts or a pool project in the works you might want to show up to the public hearing: Tuesday, Oct. 7, 4:30 PM at Town Hall. ($)

Last First Friday of the Season 🎉
Summer’s over, but Love Lane isn’t going quietly. The very last First Friday of the season is this Friday, Oct. 3, from 6–9 PM, and Mattituck is throwing one more street-long party before hunkering down for fall.
Satchel Boogie will be cranking out a mix of blues, alt-rock, country, British pop, and funk. The Village Cheese Shop dishes out $5 fondue, sandwiches, and generous pours of wine. Lombardi’s is rolling out a buffet of pastas, soup in sourdough bread bowls, and a fall-inspired dessert.
Eastern Front, Shelter Island Brewing, and Tulio’s will keep everyone’s glasses full, while kids can dive into chalk art, face painting, and a giant sand table.
The lights will be strung, the tables will be out, and the whole town will be ready to raise a glass to one last perfect Friday night.

Farmers vs. Climate Change 🌱
Climate change might feel like a debate on cable news, but on the North Fork it’s very real . Three local agricultural heavyweights met at the Cutchogue Civic Association last week to talk about how shifting weather is rewriting the farming playbook.
Ron Goerler of Jamesport Vineyards says longer, warmer seasons now push grape harvests into October and sometimes November, which sounds great until you remember he’s juggling 13 grape varieties.
Dennis Schrader of Landcraft Environments has the receipts, literal weather logs dating back years. He’s seen fewer snowy winters, more storms, and frost showing up later than ever.
Tom Wickham of Wickham’s Fruit Farm is betting on greenhouses and covered crops to keep fruit clean and yields consistent.
North Fork farmers are adapting on the fly, rethinking what they plant, when they plant it, and how they protect it. ($)

Local Spotlight
Lights, Camera, Taylor 🎥
it’s basically Taylor Swift’s world and we’re just living in it. North Fork Arts Center is hosting The Official Release Party of A Showgirl, and yes, it’s as fabulous as it sounds.
October 3–5, you’ll get the world premiere of the new music video “The Fate of Ophelia,” plus behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot, fresh lyric videos, and Taylor’s own never-before-seen reflections on the songs from her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl.
It’s part movie night, part confessional, and part peek behind the velvet curtain, all on the big screen.
Tickets are limited. Get ‘em and get ready to be in your Showgirl era.
3 Perspectives 🎨
William Ris Gallery is throwing an art party. 3 Perspectives: Landscapes Reimagined opens Saturday, October 4, with three artists turning the natural world upside down (in the best way).
• Susan Giblin - dreamy, dot-by-dot pointillism
• Michael Taylor - abstract expressionist energy
• Carol C. Young - bold, color-soaked landscapes
Three styles, one wall-to-wall vibe shift. Meet the artists and see what happens when green space gets reimagined.
