North Fork Pipeline Debate Heats Up šŸ’§

Nearly 100 North Forkers packed into the Peconic Lane Rec Center on June 2 to talk pipes, specifically, two big ones the Suffolk County Water Authority (SCWA) wants to run across the East End.

Why now? Because SCWA’s holding scoping sessions soon (translation: your chance to tell them what they should study before digging in).

What’s the Plan?

8.5 miles from Flanders to the Southold Town line (done by 2030 if all goes to plan)
3.8 miles from East Marion to Orient (timeline TBD)

Key Concerns

  • The costs (to the town and to residents)

  • The math behind water use projections

  • Whether this opens the door to overdevelopment

  • Shifts in pipeline routes that seem a little too friendly to big projects

Public Scooping Sessions

Tuesday, June 10 @ 6 PM – Riverhead Free Library
Thursday, June 12 @ 6 PM – Peconic Lane Rec Center

How to Get Involved

  • Comment online at scwa.com/nfp

  • Ask SCWA to rely on solid science, like from the U.S. Geological Survey

  • Tell your reps (state, county, town) this matters to you

Lawn and Order šŸŖ§

Southold’s got some new ideas about your lawn signs, and they want to hear what you think. The Town Board is holding a public hearing on Tuesday, June 24 at 4:30 PM at Town Hall to talk about proposed updates to the political sign rules.

Here’s what’s on the table:

Size Matters: Max sign size is 32 square feet. Bigger isn’t always better.
Keep it Simple: No electronic or flashing signs. This isn’t Times Square.
Safety First: Signs can’t block traffic views or become sidewalk hazards.
Timing: Political signs would only be allowed from Labor Day to 10 days after Election Day.
Public Property = No Go: Town land, utility poles, parks, and beaches are strictly off-limits for signs. The town can (and will) remove them.

Want to put up signs? Be ready to post a refundable security deposit. Candidates pay individually or parties can cover the group. Break the rules? Say goodbye to your deposit.

The goal? Let candidates get their message out without turning the town into a cardboard jungle. ($)
