The Lowdown
Crash before the Commemoration đşđ¸
Just days before Memorial Day, a car crash in Southold hit a little too close to home, literally. Early Saturday morning, the Southold American Legion (aka Griswold Terry Glover Post 803) took a direct hit when a vehicle veered off Main Road and slammed into their property.
The damage? The Legionâs freshly installed sign, three years of fundraising down the drain, plus a guard rail and their beloved Poppy Garden, a heartfelt tribute planted each year to honor our fallen heroes.
The silver lining: no one was hurt. And as Denise Schlachter from the Legionâs Auxiliary said, âWe will rebuild.â Insurance might help, but repairs mostly rely on donations, fundraisers, and good old-fashioned elbow grease from volunteers.
Want to help them get back on their feet (and flowers back in the ground)?
Send some love (and funds) to:

Aye aye, Captain Safety đ¤
On Saturday, Greenportâs Mitchell Park was less âquiet seaside villageâ and more ânautical bootcampâ as the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Southold Flotilla threw a party, with a purpose, for National Safe Boating Week.
There was a flag presentation (very official), a Coast Guard trumpeter (yes, live brass), and enough maritime know-how to float a battleship. Locals got hands-on with boating safety demos, learned to tie knots like pros, and practiced navigation that didnât rely on Google Maps. Bonus: free vessel safety checks for those who made a reservation.
Oh, and if youâve never belted a sea shanty in public, you missed your chance. Live maritime tunes and sing-alongs made sure the vibes were salty and sweet. ($)
