The Lowdown
Greenportās Seaport Museum āļø
The East End Seaport Museum has spent the past year taking care of the old stuff, while finding a few new reasons to get people through the door.
Executive director Erin Kimmelās first year included overseeing the first phase of the restoration of Bug Light, where new rocks, walkways, pilings, a dock and access ramps are helping protect one of Greenportās most recognizable landmarks.
Back on land, the museum has been busy too. Its historic building got some much needed masonry work, its collection is being reorganized and digitized, and exhibits are putting more focus on local maritime history, waterways, oysters and whaling.
This winter, the museum plans to pair film screenings with talks from scientists at the North Fork Arts Center. Itās also teaming up with Village Community Boathouse on a boatbuilding and rowing program for kids and adults. ($)

A North Fork Weekend šø
Plenty of North Fork weekends involve wineries, oysters and a hotel room. Leslie Merinoff decided to connect all the dots.
Her new Weekend Dose at Greenportās Lin Beach House is a three day, two night retreat designed to give guests the full local treatment, not just a place to sleep between stops.
Guests tour Merinoffās Matchbook Distilling Co. and infuse their own gin, hop aboard a boat to see Brian Kwasnieskiās pound traps in Peconic Bay, visit Widowās Hole Oyster Farm and make seasonal preserves with local produce.
Then thereās dinner. Rotating chefs turn the same locally caught fish and farm produce guests encountered during the day into meals back at the Lin, sometimes with a fish filleting lesson thrown in for good measure.

Goodbye to Copper āļø
Verizon is starting to tell some North Fork customers that the old school copper landline is heading toward retirement.
Thatās a little more complicated around here than simply unplugging one thing and plugging in another. Southold still has plenty of cellular dead zones, and some residents continue to depend on traditional landlines.
Verizon says nobody is getting cut loose without a working alternative. Before disconnecting a copper line, the company says it will determine whether the home has suitable fiber, cable or wireless service. If it doesnāt, the copper stays, at least for now.
Some letters mention Nov. 30, 2026, but that is not the day everyoneās landline suddenly goes silent. The transition still needs FCC approval and is expected to happen gradually, address by address.
The replacement could be Verizon fiber or a wireless gateway that lets customers keep using their existing home phone. In some cases, it could even be service from another provider.
