The Lowdown
New Era for SeƱor Taco š®
Southoldās SeƱor Taco is entering its next chapter. The longtime taco spot now has new owners, Nicole Munar and Carlos Alvarez, who officially took over in November. While the name and heart of the restaurant arenāt changing, the experience is.
An elevated menu leans deeper into authentic Mexican staples with new taco options, while still keeping crowd favorites like carne asada and enchiladas. Thereās also room for indulgence, white queso dip, Nutella empanadas, and a few Tex-Mex classics make an appearance.
But the biggest shift might be whatās happening beyond the plate. Saturday tequila tastings are rolling in, paired with live music. Line dancing, bingo nights, and seasonal events are also on the way, especially to bring some extra energy to the winter months.

Audit: Mattituck Fire District š
A state audit is putting the Mattituck Fire District under the microscope.
The New York State Comptrollerās Office released an audit last month that found widespread issues in how the district reviewed and approved spending, saying weak financial controls put public funds at risk. The review covered January 2023 through June 2024 and concluded the Board of Fire Commissioners was not consistently conducting a thorough or effective review before payments were made.
During that time, the district paid out roughly $1.5 million across nearly 900 non-payroll expenses. Auditors sampled a portion of those claims and found that about two-thirds lacked proper documentation or contained errors serious enough that they shouldnāt have been approved as submitted.
District officials say theyāve already begun making changes. In a written response, they acknowledged many of the findings and outlined new procedures aimed at tightening oversight, including stronger documentation requirements, updated approval forms, clearer budget reporting, and stricter rules around travel, credit card, and reimbursement expenses.

Integrative Care š
The North Fork Breast Health Coalition is bringing an important conversation back to the community on Saturday, Jan. 31. The coalition will host its second annual Integrative Approaches to Breast Cancer Care panel at Hotel Indigo in Riverhead. The free, day long event is designed for breast cancer patients and survivors, offering insight into supportive therapies that can help from diagnosis through recovery, and life beyond.
Medical experts from leading cancer centers, including Memorial Sloan Kettering, Northwell Health, NYU Langone, Stony Brook Cancer Center, and New York Cancer & Blood Specialists, will take part in a panel discussion focused on integrative care. Natural health practitioners will also share how therapies like acupuncture, nutrition, herbal support, meditation, reiki, and yoga can complement traditional treatment. Attendees will have the chance to speak one on one with professionals after the panel. ($)

Sylvester Manor has partnered with the Shelter Island History Museum to safeguard the many historic artifacts that need to be temporarily removed during construction. Instead of heading to a standard storage unit, these pieces are being cared for under museum quality conditions.
Light, humidity, temperature swings, air pollutants, pests, even the oils from human hands, can slowly damage historical objects over time. Thatās where the Shelter Island History Museum comes in.
For Sylvester Manor, the partnership supports its broader mission to preserve, cultivate, and share the siteās complex history. The 236-acre property, once a plantation and now a working educational farm and cultural site, holds stories that span centuries, and the artifacts inside the Manor House are central to telling them.
