Get your bearings with Douglass Marine 🚤
We get it, things happen. Storms hit, lines break, equipment fails, and mistakes happen. That’s why you have a TowBoatUS membership.
If your boat becomes swamped, capsizes, sinks, or just breaks down, here’s what to do:
Put on your life jacket!
Coast Guard regulations require one properly sized life jacket for every person on board.
Call the Coast Guard or 911 and provide them with a description of your vessel, situation, and current position.
Local Coast Guard- Sector Long Island Sound can be contacted on VHF channel 16 or 1-866-299-8031
Drop anchor!
If it is safe to do so, take steps to protect your boat:
Turn off the engine.
Watch for leaking fuel or other fluids.
Stay nearby if it is safe to do so.
Keep the updated coordinates of your location and the vessel available for TowBoatUS, local police, or the Coast Guard.
Call TowBoatUS
Vessel recovery requires experience and knowledge of local waters, tides, and conditions. Attempting to salvage or recover your own vessel could result in additional damage to the boat, or injury to yourself.
Take photos if you are in a safe location
Photos and documentation can help provide evidence for your insurance claim and any reimbursement requests.
Contact your marine insurance company.
Report the incident and file a claim as soon as possible.
And as always, make sure your TowBoatUS membership is in good standing.

9/11 Tribute Performance 🎭
As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the North Fork Arts Center will mark the occasion with a performance carrying an unusually personal connection to that day.
Retired FDNY Captain Kevin Shea will take the stage in The Guys on Sunday, Sept. 13. Shea, a Baiting Hollow resident and former member of Engine 40/Ladder 35, was one of the last firefighters pulled from the World Trade Center before the South Tower collapsed, and the only member of his battalion to survive.
Written by Anne Nelson, The Guys follows an FDNY captain tasked with writing eight eulogies for members of his crew killed on 9/11. He turns to a writer for help finding the words.
Shea previously performed the firefighter role alongside Eileen Trilli at CAST in Southold two years ago. Producer Stephen Ness remembers arriving with 300 packs of tissues.

History Needs a Few Helping Hands 🙋
The Southold Historical Museum has 19 historic structures, more than 64,000 items in its collection and over 30 events a year.
The staff keeping all of that moving? Just six people.
Which is why the museum is making a new push for volunteers, led by Maya Bliss, its new education and programming liaison. Bliss is focused on supporting the museum’s longtime volunteers, reconnecting with former ones and convincing a few new faces that you don’t need a history degree, or a wide-open calendar, to pitch in.
Volunteers can give as little as two hours a month, with opportunities ranging from gardening and quilting to greeting visitors and helping at Horton Point Lighthouse, where the museum is particularly looking for extra hands right now.

One Act Festival 🎭
Northeast Stage is handing the spotlight to North Fork playwrights this weekend with its Fourth Annual One Act Festival at the Jamesport Meeting House.
The festival was originally created by Corchaug Rep, which merged with Northeast Stage last year, and the tradition came along for the ride. This year’s lineup features three original plays, each written by someone with local theater ties, and they couldn’t be much more different.
“The Temp Agency” by Christian Lepore starts things off with absurd comedy and one particularly unusual job seeker.
James Pritchard’s “An Artistic Dialogue” gets more introspective, exploring creativity, distractions and the nagging question of why artists keep making things when it feels like nobody cares.
Then there’s Nicholas Auletti’s “Bidayas in Waconda Springs,” a tragicomedy about two longtime potato farming friends in Kansas saying what may be their final goodbye.
The entire show runs about an hour, with performances Friday, Aug. 21 through Sunday, Aug. 23 at 7 PM.

$5 Treasure Map 🗺️
There’s buried treasure hiding somewhere on the North Fork. And for five bucks, Bill Moulton will point you in the general direction.
Moulton is the Greenport based creative behind Greenie Supply & Tackle, a wonderfully unusual project built around handmade treasure maps that lead to actual buried treasure.
The adventure starts at an old waterfront fishing station at Port of Egypt Marine in Southold, where a vending machine dispenses the latest map. From there, treasure hunters follow clues, count steps, break out a compass and occasionally wonder whether they’ve completely misunderstood the assignment.
Moulton chooses spots with a simple requirement: the walk there should be beautiful, interesting and a little wild.
The maps started as an art experiment and became Moulton’s way of nudging people out of their routines for an hour.
There are hints online for the geographically challenged, plus a full reveal for anyone who wants to quietly save the day without admitting they needed help.

Local Spotlight
Where a Top Chef Eats 🍽️
When one of the country’s best known chefs comes to the North Fork hungry, it’s worth paying attention to where he stops.
In a recent video with Condé Nast Traveler, chef Tom Colicchio makes his way around the North Fork to highlight a few of his favorite local food spots. His itinerary includes Southold Fish Market for fresh local seafood, Peeko Oysters for oysters straight from the Peconic Bay, and The Village Cheese Shop in Mattituck for artisan cheese.
It’s a pretty great little North Fork food tour, and a chance to see a few familiar local favorites through the eyes and appetite of a celebrated chef. If you’ve ever wondered where a guy like Tom Colicchio eats when he’s out here, now you know.
