The Lowdown
Sun-Powered Dreams ☀️
The sun might soon shine a little brighter on Cox Lane. Southold’s Planning Board is reviewing a plan to turn the capped Cutchogue landfill into a solar farm, complete with nearly 8,000 panels. Summit Ridge Energy is behind the project, aiming to generate enough juice to power hundreds of homes.
Originally greenlit in 2020 with a battery storage component, the plan has since nixed the batteries (thanks to a local moratorium) but kept the panels. At a recent meeting, locals asked all the right questions: What about noise? The environment? Who cleans it up if it all goes dark?
Summit Ridge says the inverters are quiet, the landfill cap will be protected, and yes, there's a plan for clean-up. Next up: the Planning Board compiles feedback and decides whether this landfill glow-up gets the final OK. ($)
Team R.I.C.E. Is Headed to Houston 🤖
North Fork’s brainiest bots are back at it! Team R.I.C.E. 870 — that’s Respect, Integrity, Compassion, and Equity — just scored an invite to the 2025 FIRST Championship in Houston, April 16–19.
Launched at Southold High in 2002 and now repping Greenport and Mattituck too, the team’s been coached for over a decade by the dynamic duo Christine Schade and Bob Gammon. Their motto? “Effort equals results.” And based on those late-night build sessions (3 p.m. to 10 p.m., anyone?), the kids are putting in the work.
This year’s challenge is called “Reefscape” think building coral and battling algae (aka playground balls). Team R.I.C.E. is gearing up to make waves.
Want to support their trip? Buy a paper fish (yes, really) for $10+ at the Southold Fish Market or from a team member. Write a message and your fishy words of encouragement will swim their way onto school walls. ($)

Foodie Friday 🍽
Brunch
It’s not quite breakfast, not quite lunch, and fully an excuse to drink before noon without judgment. Whether you're craving a towering stack of pancakes, eggs that come with a side of Instagram glory, or just a really solid Bloody Mary, the North Fork’s got your late-morning cravings covered.
So loosen your waistband and cancel your weekend morning plans — we’re diving fork-first into our top Brunch Spots on the North Fork.
🇬🇷 Hellenic Not just a go-to for lunch and dinner it’s officially a brunch destination, too. Think Greek-inspired Frittata, Shock-Shuka or indulgent picks like Wagyu Corned Beef Hash. Add $19 bottomless mimosas and a sunny patio, and you’ve got your new Sunday ritual. Menu
Our Choice: Wagyu Corned Beef Hash
🍔 First and South A Sunday brunch spot, where you’ll find all the brunch classics, with a twist. Think French toast piled high with seasonal fruit and whipped cream, or a Brunch Burger stacked with Swiss cheese, bacon jam, and a perfectly runny egg on a toasted English muffin. (Drooling yet?)
Wash it down with a cold-pressed juice or something a little stronger (we’re not judging). It's the kind of spot that makes you wish every day was Sunday. Menu
Our Choice: B.L.H.T.E and a homemade Pop Tart
🥞 The Watershed Kitchen & Bar This laid-back gem dishes out the kind of brunch that cures just about everything. We’re talking Crab Cake Benedict, Steak & Eggs, and a Dominican Special that’s basically sunshine on a plate. Got a sweet tooth? Nutella French Toast and Chocolate Chip Pancakes have you covered. Menu
Our Choice: Nutella French Toast
🍳 Alpina A brunch menu full of Alpine-inspired delights, from hearty Swiss onion soup to Alpine Müesli you'll feel like you're dining in a cozy Swiss chalet. Escape to the Alps—without leaving the North Fork. Menu
Our Choice: Cast Iron Duck Skillet
🧇 Main Road Biscuit Co. They don’t officially serve “Brunch” but their daily offerings are all about that brunch vibe. From their melt-in-your-mouth buttermilk biscuits and house-made jams to seasonal pancakes and French toast.
For something heartier go with the fried chicken or a fresh salad, and wash it all down with a refreshing smoothie. They deliver a taste of Americana that’ll make you feel like every day is Sunday. Menu
Our Choice: Eggs Bennie w/ Crabcake & Fried Green Tomatoes
