Women Who Kept the Lights On 💡

For generations, they kept the lights on (literally) and history mostly forgot to send a thank you note. Now, the Southold Historical Museum is flipping the switch back on.

This winter, the museum’s lecture series at the Ann Currie-Bell House will spotlight the women who manned (and womanned) America’s lighthouses, hauled oil up narrow stairs, scrubbed lenses in the salt air, and watched the horizon while the rest of the country slept.

Author Mary Korpi opens the series on Feb. 26 with a deep dive into North Fork’s Stella Prince’s life, building on years of research into women whose stories barely made it onto the page.

Later in the season, Cynthia Barrett will unpack how salty shipboard slang worked its way into daily language, including “three sheets to the wind,” “loose cannon,” and “the bitter end.”

And in April, Sally Snowman, often called the last official lighthouse keeper in the country, joins historian Jeremy D’Entremont for a big-picture look at nearly 250 years of women keeping watch.

hamptonBRIDE Toasts the North Fork 👰‍♀️

hamptonBRIDE brought its North Fork debut to The Lin Beach House, welcoming close to 100 venues, planners, creatives and hospitality pros for a night designed to say hello, and maybe also, we’re here, let’s build something together.

hamptonBRIDE, which launched in October, was created as a hyper local resource for couples planning weddings from the North Fork to the Hamptons and Montauk. Built by people who live and work here, the goal is to connect soon to be weds with the photographers, florists, caterers and venues that make an East End wedding feel like an East End wedding.

More gatherings are planned for the Hamptons and Montauk this spring, plus a new podcast hosted by photographer Janelle Brooke, spotlighting the people and ideas shaping weddings out here.
