Battle of the Bands: Round Two 🎶

Greenport’s turning the volume back up this Labor Day. After last year’s smash-hit debut, the Battle of the Bands is back in Mitchell Park, 6–9 PM. The crowd gets a say in who takes home the crown. (Yes, there’s an applause meter ready to measure your cheers, stomps, and dance moves.)

Here’s the lineup:

  • Daydream – rock + pop

  • Swann Live – R&B + soul

  • Seismatics – high-energy rock

  • Sweet Ride – rock, country, blues (returning from last year)

Rain in the forecast? No worries, the music moves indoors to the American Legion Hall on Third Street. ($)

Chef René Böhme 👨‍🍳

Chef René Böhme, the guy who once ran the kitchen at Anker pre-pandemic, is back. This time he’s the culinary director for the whole Green Hill Group, which means his fingerprints are on everything: Anker, Alpina, Green Hill Kitchen, Alpina Bakery, and Hampton Kitchen Delicatessen.

Böhme trained in Germany, sharpened his skills at Michelin-starred spots across Europe, and cooked at NYC’s iconic Restaurant Daniel. He’s known for low-waste operations and obsessive cost control.

Organic Farming on the Fork 🧑‍🌾

What does it actually mean to farm “organic” on the North Fork? The North Fork Environmental Council rounded up three local legends to find out: Louisa Hargrave, Russ McCall, and Ira Haspel.

Hargrave:Sustainable Viticulture

  • Planted Long Island’s first vinifera vines back in the ’70s.

  • Avoided herbicides until reality and humidity set in, but tech eventually cut spraying way down.

  • Helped launch the region’s sustainable winegrowing program (yes, there’s a 122-page checklist).

  • Her big ask? Keep buying local wine.

McCall: Regenerative Agriculture

  • Came home to stop a 60-home subdivision and planted vines to keep the land (and taxes) alive.

  • Philosophy: what you take out, you put back. Compost, grazing animals, and even letting nature handle the circle of life.

  • Regenerative farming is just “common sense.”

Haspel: Biodynamic Farming

  • Thought it was “Hocus Pocus” until he tasted the difference

  • Think planting by moon cycles, interplanting crops, and using funky compost recipes
