Long Island Sweet Corn 🌽

Corn season on the North Fork doesn’t wait around. At Latham Farms in Orient, Erin Stanton kicks off the season early, sliding those first plantings under plastic like mini greenhouses. Result? Fresh ears on the stand by July 4th every year.

Meanwhile, Sang Lee in Peconic and Harbes in Mattituck keep the waves coming by staggering plantings. And for the record: zero GMOs. Just pure, old-school sweet corn the way it should be.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t peel the husk at the farm stand. Seriously. It dries the corn out and makes farmers cranky.

  • Corn is sweetest the day it’s picked—after that, the sugars start turning to starch. Translation: eat it fast.

Women at the Helm ⛵️

A crew of North Fork women took charge of the sails at Old Cove Yacht Club in New Suffolk. The first-ever local women’s sailing program taught moms, newcomers, and lifelong boat-riders how to sail: trimming sails, tacking through the wind, and steering like pros.

The buzz? Huge. They opened 12 spots and had 30 women on the waitlist. Turns out, plenty of locals were ready to swap “passenger” for “skipper.”

But it’s more than lessons. There are winery hangouts, house parties, and Wednesday night races where students hop aboard real crews, then toast afterward at Legends. It’s about building community just as much as building skills.

By the final week, the women weren’t just practicing, they were sailing the instructors around.

Southold Hosts Active Shooter Drill 🚨

It’s the nightmare nobody wants to imagine, but local cops trained for it anyway. On August 13, about 40 officers swarmed Southold Elementary for a full-scale active shooter drill.

The Drills: Officers ran four scenarios, clearing classrooms, searching in pairs for “shooters,” and treating injuries on manikins.

Teachers Got a Lesson Too: About 35 Southold staffers joined in, learning that locked interior doors have never been breached in these situations. Officers urged them to set up safe zones, block window sightlines, and keep classrooms quiet so police can keep moving.

This training rotates schools each year, Greenport in 2023, Mattituck in 2024, and now Southold. Suffolk County runs versions monthly at schools, churches, and businesses. ($)
