The Lowdown

After a much-needed tune-up, Greenport’s beloved Mitchell Park carousel is spinning back to life this Saturday at 11 AM, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony starring the cutest grand marshals around: local school kids.

This isn’t just any merry-go-round. It’s a 100-year-old Herschell-Spillman beauty that’s been delighting riders since the 1920s. But after one of its thirty-ish horses broke loose last fall (no, not like that), the whole ride was shut down for repairs. What they found? Worn-out bearings, damaged roof spires, and a whole lotta age showing.

So in came the pros, North Fork Welding and WRF Designs from Connecticut, to take it apart, reinforce the structure, and make sure it passed every last safety test with flying colors. The result? A smoother, stronger, and shinier ride.

Southold’s Fourth Grade Tour Guides đŸ§‘â€đŸ«

Southold Village just got a crash course in local history, taught by the town’s finest historians-in-training: the fourth graders of Southold Elementary.

These mini-docents led a full-blown walking tour through Southold’s historic heart, schooling visitors on 12+ local landmarks. We’re talking the 1902 schoolhouse, one of New York’s oldest Presbyterian churches, the pre-1850 Beckwith Store, a former car dealership-turned-pizzeria, and the all-purpose Prince Building.

The project was a team effort between the school and the Southold Historical Museum, with new director Darren St. George giving major props to the students for turning textbook facts into engaging storytelling. ($)
