The Lowdown
Neighbors Feeding Neighbors ❤️
After the federal government’s shutdown froze SNAP (food stamps) and HEAP (heating assistance), families across the North Fork are struggling to keep food on the table and heat in their homes.
At CAST, Executive Director Erica Steindl says food demand jumped 27% in one week, with half of their homebound residents hit directly by the funding freeze. SNAP cards stopped working, HEAP funding stalled, and families are now choosing between heating bills and groceries.
Local heroes are already stepping up:
CAST is running extra mobile pantry deliveries and just wrapped two successful food drives at Southold IGA and Cutchogue King Kullen.
Food Rescue US: North Fork launched “Snap into Action,” gathering hundreds of pounds of surplus squash from Krupski Farms and delivering it to local pantries and churches.
Southold Fire Department is hosting a food and hygiene drive through Nov. 11
East End Disability Associates is running a “Give & Go” drive weekdays in Riverhead.
The Cutchogue Civic Association is hosting a community discussion Nov. 12 at 6 PM at the Cutchogue–New Suffolk Library: “Surplus Food and Produce Find a Home Here.”

Debut Mystery Novel 🕵️♂️
Looks like Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Wick might need to clear a little more space on the bookshelf. His debut crime novel, The Ruins, is officially under consideration for the 2026 Edgar Awards, the Oscars of mystery writing.
The story drops you into 1954 Lindenhurst, where Police Chief Paul Beirne investigates a woman’s brutal murder on the railroad tracks. But this isn’t your average whodunit, as Beirne digs deeper, he uncovers ties to a decades-old killing and secrets that stretch way past Long Island.
Wick says the book was inspired by a real cold case he covered for Newsday back in 1981, when a 26-year-old murder was finally solved. ($)

Marooned Morsels 🍪
Chef Eliot Ramirez, a Manhattan-born, classically trained chef who once made NYC TikTok-famous cookies, just launched his own local brand, Marooned Morsels.
Before trading subways for sunsets, Ramirez was the chef behind the viral cookies at Crossbar Café on the Upper West Side, the kind of giant, gooey, chocolate-studded monsters that had people waiting 25 minutes just to snag a few.
Now, he’s baking from his Mattituck home under a home processor’s license, turning out his signature milk, dark, and white chocolate chip cookies, plus seasonal flavors like pumpkin spice white chocolate chunk.

Animal of The Week
Bluey is a gentle, loving, and incredibly smart pup who’s ready to find his forever family. He’s the kind of dog who makes friends everywhere he goes, tail wagging, eyes bright, and always ready for a hello or a belly rub.
Bluey loves people, families, kids, you name it, and he’s happiest when he’s right by your side.
Bonus points: he’s a quick learner and totally food-motivated (treats = tricks unlocked). Whether it’s a stroll through the park or a lazy afternoon on the couch, Bluey’s just happy to be part of the pack.
He’d just need a polite intro with any future dog siblings before moving in, manners first, of course.
So if you’re looking for a loyal, loving best friend who’ll greet every day and every person with a wag and a grin, Bluey’s your guy.
Visit Bluey at the NFAWL Aquebogue location from 10-3 PM

Trivia Time 🧠
Your brain deserves more than scrolling and skimming. Each week we’ll hit you with one question designed to make you pause, scratch your head, and maybe argue with whoever’s sitting next to you. Think of it as a quick mental pit stop: a chance to flex your random knowledge, test your memory, or finally use that obscure fact you learned in 7th grade.
Just click one of the multiple-choice answers to see if you got it right!
Find more info on the answer at the very end of the newsletter
In Friends Season 5, Episode 8 (“The One with All the Thanksgivings”), which two characters end up with a turkey on their heads? |
Last Week’s Results
Last week we asked: Which Peanuts character wears the chefs hat in “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving”?
Answer: Snoopy
64% of you got it right, the rest might need a refresher on who’s running that backyard kitchen.

Local Spotlight
North Fork Supper Club 🍽
The North Fork Supper Club, dreamed up by Christie Moore, is flipping the script on dining deals.
The idea? Simple. The North Fork thrives on community, the people, the food, the farms and the Supper Club ties it all together. For locals, membership means exclusive weekly perks at your favorite spots. For restaurants, it means steady support long after the summer crowd’s gone home.
Current member perks include:
🍴 Complimentary bites at North Fork Table & Inn
🍷 Off-menu 5- and 6-course tastings at Maroni
☕️ 10% off your caffeine fix at Southold General
🐟 20% off the full menu at Little Fish
🥐 10% off food + merch at Panoramica
But the best part? Every membership gives back. A portion of proceeds goes to helping support the same farmers who keep our tables full and our community fed.
